Tom Brown's Tracker School - Introduction When most people think of home they think of sitting in their living rooms, the television on, the lamp shining bright. When Tom Brown, Jr. thinks of home, he thinks of the wilderness, the moon glistening above, the sounds of wildlife intermingling with the crackling of leaves and the stirring of bushes as animals make their way through their world.

Ahh bliss.... The 2nd weekend of October as southern New England comes into glory, we have a 60 degree (judge: fairly warm) day, misty rain. We got a nice fire going in the woodstove on the porch and have opened up the interior door and windows to take the chill off inside. I have the tv on in the other room, but it doesnt detract, there is a CPTV piece on about restoring light houses. To me, this definitely adds to the ambiance.

Peg was here today with Emma.. Ems had a nice run in the yard, and brought a smile to everyone's faces. Pete and that dog seem to get a long very well! Emma can't help but make people smile with her expressive face and engaging personality! Great to see you, Peggy! You've been so busy building your life, have I told you lately how impressed I am? Remember to keep taking those moments for yourself. They'll be your path to success.

The snapdragons are looking very rich on these overcast days. Of the variety of reds and pinks that are growing over the wall between driveway and back deck, one particular plant spots a brilliant and velvetty dark red flower, perfect for Fall.

I installed a product called LunarBar; it shows me the phase of the moon and gives me links to the Solstice dates. Friday December 21st is Winter Solstice. I find a lot of appeal in this holiday. I am thinking it would be a great day to hold a Wine and Cheese party. Must be the holiday mood. The wine isn't necessary, but makes things cheery. Perhaps everyone could bring a small sampler bottle of their favorite, or a block of cheese, with plenty of tasting for all. For safety's sake, and to fit the mood, the Solstice occurs at 2:20 in the afternoon, but an evening party would be better for the working crowd... Interested? I'm thinking Mancinis, Pavelka, Bergerons, Locontes, and you? Write me regarding Winter Solstice 2001

cheerio!
New England leaves are getting serious about turning in southern New England. But it might not be too late to hit northern new england for its renowned leaf peeping!
Good morning! It's a bit misty out this morning...thinking about raining..I sat outside with the cat this morning as I warmed my hands on my coffee mug. I was still, opening my hears and hearts to the world, and all of a sudden a flourish of birds in concert came in to aural focus. They sounded lovely!

Of course only a mourning dove and junco were at the feeder. The squirrels seemed to have finished off the seeds again.

Health Update - Walked around the building at lunch time today.. Had soup and salad for lunch. that's one for water intake and one each for fruits and vegetables. I believe this morning's water countered my coffee diuretic intake. Out for now.
Hey, PriceScan can find us a great digital camera with optical zoom to take floral shots!

Hi all. The first frost hit. ONe thirsty impatien looks pretty hurt this morning, but snapdragons and geraniums are smiling strong! Cat's out to enjoy 40 - 50 degree and sunny weather.

It was cold this morning. Good thing I put most of the plants in on the porch. the impatiens outside looked a little worse for wear this morning. I didn't actually SEE any frost, but it sure was nippy last night!

Actually last night we celebrated Fall. Pete made a fire in the woodstove, first ever for us, and we shared pumpkin pie with a little vanilla icecream with his mom. A Tasty treat! And finally we have something to make those stick piles go away!

eDiary: Sunday afternoon. Spent 5 hours today figuring out how to to do some things in Word I hadn't used before - Master Document feature, and consecutive page numbering! But before all that I managed to catch a glimpse of a cardinal and some house finches at the feeder. I have taken to mixing blackoil sunflower and then a finch mix in the feeders, and the birds do alternate their visits when the seeds appear. Today must have been that transition. But since the finch seed was just starting its section, i took some extra handfuls of blackoil sunflower seeds and through them under the garden birdfeeder. Keeps the cardinals coming back. Also put up some more suet for the woodpeckers. Sticky!
eDiary: Saturday Oct 6, Rainy. Good day for cozying up indoors with the cat and the beau. Had we thought of it early enough in the day it would have been a good one to test out the woodstove!

A woodpecker, chickadees, 3 pairs of cardinals...A mourning dove. Did you ever notice that mourning doves feed off the ground, but hang out high in the trees? Oh look now a nuthatch joins... these birds have three tray feeders, but not a single tube feeder, and they do seem to miss it! Saw some finches ...But alas a neighbor's cat, and Sam the baseball catcher border collie have scared them all away......
well, good morning there. I was going to relay all the happenings to you at the house in Forestville. It's been a busy energetic morning for all of my guests who are preparing for winter. But Jessie just charged headlong into the croud and dispersed them! Jessie is my black calico cat, and the guests of course are the wonderful variety of song and woodland birds visiting my feeders and garden!
