Garden Magic

Plant your seeds

Time to think about what to plant this year. In the Windsor house, I discovered that the bulbs all came back (oriental lillies, day lillies) as did the canterbury bells, one of the foxgloves, and a huge mound of bee balm. The rose survived of course. I can't wait to see those salmon petals!

Most importantly, there is a whole lot of space taken up by spring violets, hyacinths and other spring flowers. We will desprately be in need of some annuals and or a mix of perrenials. Along that brick wall you would be able to see larkspur and snap dragons blowing in the wind as you turned on to the street a block away. I cound some catnip - might save that for another location.

I seem to have picked up a number of seeds for flowers that grow around 3-4 feet. I guess I saw that brick end of the house as one huge canvas to paint on with summer flowers! Old Spice Sweet Peas and fragrant 4 OClocks ought to mix nicely in the evening breezes. The iceland poppies (orange mission bells) will remind me of the Gristmill in Gruene Texas, and Lupine will heartely take me to Maine or Nova Scotia. It seems that the Traveling Garden has more than one way to cast it's magic. All the gardens may be with me, but each garden takes me elsewhere!

Dreams of Mediterranean Coast

77 Degrees and Just Nice!

This weekend I sat out in much lighter than normal clothes..I actually was warm enough in a tanktop! But I wrapped my hair in a bun with a bright white scarf sporting hot pink roses...felt part 50s, part Italy/Greece... I brought my blooming geraniums out for some sun. the green metal bistro was parked up against the brick wall of the house for added warmth. I set the geraniums on the table, leaving room for my book, sunglasses, and cold drink... I spent hours reading all about how Frances Meyers discovered an ancient antique sink in her back yard in Bramasole in Tuscany, working with various contractors to order a gate, re build a stone wall, and have guests with only a dining room table and old linen cloth. She took a jar and filled it with wildflowers (the advantages of living near tick country - plenty of flowers for spur of the moment decorating!)

There was a slight breeze and as I rubbed the geraniums between thumb and forefinger a wonderful scent of its leaves drifted towards me...I squinted in the sunlight, took a slow deep breath, and smiled.
